Who is blak mkt?

Are you wondering what is the blak mkt or who we are? Just know we are a group of black women, that includes Gena P. who have come together to share information to help keep black people moving upward and forward! Now, that that’s over with, let’s go learn more about black-owned banks!

Black-Owned Bank facts

As we began considering how we can best participate in this National “Great Awakening” we thought about finances first. In addition, we thought not only, who we should donate to, but also, where we keep our money.  There is a lot of information to share!

There are approximately 42 black “owned” banks in the United States.  Owned simply refers to a majority black ownership or majority on the board and primarily serving black communities.  In many cases, these banks stand out for financing communities, small businesses, housing, financial literacy education, and public works.

With more and more thoughtful consideration being given to the wealth gap and systems in place to perpetuate systemic racism, it is incumbent upon us to be diligent in our spending AND saving.

Found a Black-Owned Bank…Now what?

  • Do your research.  Above all, begin recognizing what is most important to you about a bank such as geography, branch locations, online banking, account fees, etc.
  • You do not have to move all of your money at once.  Consider starting with a savings account. Learn why on this here.
  • Build a relationship with the bank staff, if possible.
